'Gender' is a catch-all term: it is used in discourses on women's and LGBTIQ+ rights, gender equality, sexual education, gender studies – and by the anti-gender movements. The book offers an analysis of the blurring boundaries between political positions known as 'anti-gender' on the one hand and feminist and LGBTIQ+ strands on the other, starting from the hypothesis that there are discursive bridges between both camps which go beyond the exploitation of emancipatory attitudes. Rather, there are linkages which originate in mainstream feminist and LGBTIQ+ positions. The volume sheds light on these linkages in order to make the case for the need for alliances and dialogues to more effectively counter crusades on women's and LGBTIQ+ constituencies.
The volume aims to understand the extent to which 'anti-gender' claims resonate with certain strands in feminist and LGBTIQ+ politics, thus building discursive bridges to more liberal and progressive parts of society. 'Anti-gender' activists trivialize feminist and LGBTIQ+ theorizing and activism as a cohesive unity under the rubric of 'gender'. Yet, the feminist and LGBTIQ+ camp itself is traversed by political conflicts, disagreements, and diverging interests. Thus, the authors analyze linkages between some of these contested positions and 'anti-gender' discourse. The volume emphasizes blurring boundaries between different discursive domains to make the case for the need for alliances and dialogues to more effectively counter crusades on women's and LGBTIQ+ constituencies. The chapters discuss factors, in feminist and queer discourses and politics, which open the doors for alignment, cooptation, and/or appropriation by 'anti-gender' groups as well as feminist and queer reactions to attacks as a unitary entity, and common ground for alliances and joint strategies in response to these attacks.
